SBIR/STTR Direct Financial Assistance Program

Applications for Round 2 SBIR/STTR Direct Financial Assistance Programs is closed

The CSIT SBIR/STTR Direct Financial Assistance Program aims to enhance the innovative economy in NJ through financial support to NJ small businesses seeking to or participating in the federal SBIR/STTR program. 


The Program has three objectives, which are geared towards accelerating the growth of the innovation economy in the State: 

1. Increase the success rate of NJ grant applications seeking Federal funding for SBIR/STTR programs

2. Reduce the financial burden for small NJ companies that have won Phase I, Fast Track, or Direct to Phase II Awards/Contracts through the federal SBIR/STTR Program.

3. Increase success and maximize growth of small NJ companies in moving from Phase I to Phase II of the SBIR/STTR Federal program

The CSIT board has approved $550,000 for the SBIR/STTR Direct Financial Assistance Program.

Program Overview

Direct Funding Grant (For Phase I, Fast-Track, and Direct-to-Phase II Award Winners):

CSIT will provide a grant of $25,000 each to twelve (12) NJ small business that have received a Phase I, Fast-Track, or Direct-to-Phase II award letter/contract no more than two (2) years prior to the date of CSIT’s Notice of Grant Funding (November 23, 2018). The grant is aimed at helping awardees increase intensity of research, strengthen commercialization plans, cover operational expenses, and become more competitive for Phase II funding.


Bridge Funding Grant (For Phase II SBIR/STTR Applicants):

CSIT will provide a $50,000 bridge grant to five (5) NJ small businesses that have competed Phase I of Federal SBIR/STTR program and have applied for Phase II funding no more than two (2) years prior to the date of CSIT’s Notice of Grant Funding (November 23, 2018). The grant will enable NJ small businesses maintain operations while waiting on Phase II awards and cover general operational expenses directly related to the project/product for which a Federal Phase II award is being sought.

 


Eligibility Criteria 

 
Direct Funding Grant

 

  1. Phase I SBIR/STTR Award/Contract Recipient: Be a recipient of a Federal SBIR/STTR Phase I, Fast-Track or Direct-to-Phase II award/contract within the last two (2) years prior to the issuance of Notice of Funding (no earlier than 11/23/2018)

  2. NJ-Based Small Business: Have a valid NJ business registration certificate and current tax clearance certificate

  3. NJ Principal Investigator/Project ManagerHave a NJ resident or employee designated as Principal Investigator/Project Manager for the duration of the grant

  4. NJ Employees Minimum: Have 50% or more employees working in NJ as evidenced by payroll records (Fulltime/part-time employees and contractors)

  5. NJ Primary Place of Performance: Primary place of performance on the SBIR/STTR project award is a NJ address

  6. Max. Federal SBIR/STTR Awards: Awarded no more than 5 Federal SBIR/STTR awards/contracts (Phase I and/or Phase II combined)

  7. NJCSIT SBIR/STTR Awards: Has not been awarded an NJ CSIT Phase I or Phase II direct financial assistance grant within the past one year from the Notice of Funding issuance date (no later than 11/23/2019)
 


Bridge Funding Grant

  1. Phase I SBIR/STTR Award/Contract Recipient:  Be a recipient of a Federal SBIR/STTR Phase I, Fast-Track or Direct-to-Phase II award/contract within the last two (2) years prior to the issuance of Notice of Funding (no earlier than 11/23/2018)

2. Phase II SBIR/STTR Applicant : Submitted a Phase II SBIR/STTR application and have not received a Federal response yet on their Phase II application

3. NJ-Based Small Business: Have a valid NJ business registration certificate and current tax clearance certificate

4. NJ Principal Investigator/Project Manager: Have a NJ resident or employee designated as Principal Investigator/Project Manager for the duration of the grant​

5NJ Employees Minimum: Have 75% or more employees working in NJ as evidenced by payroll records (Fulltime/part-time employees and contractors)
